Msts cambrian route1/27/2023 ![]() ![]() The loaded trains at the top and the empties at the bottom are connected to this rope, and the heavier loaded train pulls the lighter empties up the other line of rails.Īs you can see, the main line was not self acting! Self acting inclines, such as those used in quarries, have two lines of rails, and an endless "rope" (wire). The empties were hauled back up hill by horses (Who rode back down in special wagons at the rear of the loaded gravity trains.) The horses were replaced by steam locomotives, which later took over most of the loaded work as well. The Ffestiniog Railway shipped slate down hill by gravity(The Original route was downhill all the way from Blanau to Porthmadoc). The later books, and to a large amount, the TV Series/films are not so anchored in reality. I think that one MAY be based on the "Fire Queen" (Penrhyn Railway) that was found in the back of a shed, behind a vast pile of firewood logs!) I believe everything happened, somewhere, at some time. ![]()
